supply, sherwin williams, gilead, diageo and alexion as my top ten which i thought would outperform the rest of the market through the end of the year. now that the new year is only a month away, we got to go over them again. it's time to review how the stocks have held up and whether some of them or one of them don't belong. in the past two months, well let's just say it's been a rough period for the market as a whole. i recommended these ten stocks the s&p was at 1455. since then the s&p has swung down to 1355. right before the thanksgiving holiday. before rebounding back up to 1413. still, it's down about 3% from where i first started recommending these. we have been whipsawing up and down, based on fears about fiscal cliff, and hopes that we might get a possible deal to bridge the fiscal cliff in washington. but through the period these ten growth stocks have held up surprisingly well. i say surprising, because these stocks all had huge gains going into the fourth quarter. and with the fiscal cliff looming, many investors have been selling their biggest winners to take advantage

high-profile cases that would help define the rights and benefits of same-sex couples. pete williams is the justice correspondent. he joins me from outside the supreme court. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning, chris. we're wait to go hear whether the court will take either of these two cases. the defense of marriage act passed in 1996 by congress, signed into law by president clinton. and what it says is that for federal law purposes, marriage can exist only between a man and a woman. so that means this in the nine states where same sex marriage is legal, if a same sex couple gets married there, they're considered mayrried for state lw but not federal law and the practical consequence is they are denied about 1,000 federal benefits, tax benefits, survivors benefits, to be covered under health insurance. that sort of thing. it will have to decide whether that law is unconstitutional discrimination, denying those couples equal treatment. what the advocates of overturning it say is never before has the federal government done anything but defer to a state's definition of wha

william. he's back at a london hospital this morning with his wife catherine. they are expecting their first child, and catherine is being treated for symptoms of very severe morning sickness. britain all abuzz with news of the pregnancy. richard quest is live in london this morning. hey, richard. >> good morning to you. indeed, the prince is now back at the hospital. the duchess is being treated for this very severe form of morning sickness. depending on the number, this affects 1 in 50 or 2 in 50 women. but when it does hit apparently it's very bad. although it doesn't necessarily pose a threat to the life of the mother or baby, it is considered to be so debilitating that you do go into hospital for this infusion of fluids. which i'm told by experts make things a great deal better. this is the way the morning papers in the uk are reporting the story. just simply a wealth of puns, jokes, and the like. kate expectations, says "the daily sun."
